Charge

Dear Colleagues:

We write to ask you to serve on a joint Senate-Administration Oversight Committee that will supervise and coordinate the second phase of this campus’s examination of gender equity issues related to faculty.

Establishment of this Committee is pursuant to a recommendation of the Gender Equity Committee, appointed by Vice Chancellor Norman Abrams, which issued its Report in October 2000. In its report that Committee recommended further work in three areas: 1) compensation practices in the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry; 2) improvement in the quality and accessibility of campus data records relevant to these issues; and 3) further investigation of a broad range of issues including maternity leave, child care, sexual harassment, space allocation, research support, and similar issues.

In fulfillment of this charge we are establishing three committees charged with each of the three areas of investigation enumerated above. The charge to your Oversight Committee is to integrate the reports of the three joint Senate-Administration committees that we are appointing at this time, assure that they do not overlap or duplicate each other, and otherwise coordinate their work. The Oversight Committee will be composed of the Chairs of these three committees and several additional members. Professor Anne Peplau, a member of the original Gender Equity Committee and of the Executive Board of the Senate, has agreed to serve as chair of the Oversight Committee.

We enclose pertinent excerpts from Vice Chancellor Abrams’ original charge letter to the Gender Equity Committee. We believe that the general comments made in that letter are equally applicable in the context of the work your committee will be doing.

The Chancellor’s office will provide the staff support to assist these committees. We hope that their work will be completed within a reasonable time frame, and we ask your Committee to consult with each of the three committees after they have had an opportunity to meet, in order to establish a reasonable timetable for completion.

We hope that you will agree to participate in this important campus Committee, and we thank you in advance for your willingness to serve. We believe that your service on this Committee will help to ensure the success of the three committees, each of which will address matters vital to the future of higher education and to the continuing leadership role of UCLA among major research universities of the world.

Sincerely,

Professor Stephen C. Yeazell
